Long Island acquired by Rideau Waterways Land Trust

With the support of our community, including the Rideau Lakes Environmental Foundation, the Rideau Waterways Land Trust has completed the acquisition of a significant portion of Long Island in Big Rideau Lake.

The generous donation of 33 acres of land on Island 186 had ensured the future protection of one of our lake’s special places. This land supports many species of birds, mammals, invertebrates, trees and other plant life – including many species at risk. Over 2,500 meters of shoreline will stay natural, abutting the fish sanctuaries of Lost Lake and Long Island Lake.

But land isn’t all. Continued stewardship is critical and that’s where community support comes in. The RLEF was delighted to do our part to ensure the preservation of this special place on our lake.
